Fall Brings Out More Snakes

Fall Brings Out More Snakes

It’s fall, which means snakes are starting to come out of hiding in Florida. In fact, Southwest Florida has been reporting more vipers, cottonmouths and rattlesnakes. These types of snakes breed in the spring and by fall, their eggs have hatched. Fall is the season that allows the now adolescent snakes to start wandering their surroundings. And, they are very curious little ones.

Due to over development issues, snakes are losing their natural habitats, which means they are wandering into areas filled with people. Sadly, many of them are being killed this way.

Interesting Snake Facts:

  • There are about 3,000 different species of snakes
  • 70 million years ago, snakes had back legs
  • They do not live in Ireland, New Zealand, or the North and South Poles
  • Mongooses are immune to snake venom
  • They have over 200 teeth, but they are not used for chewing
  • Snake fangs last about 6-10 weeks and are replaced with new ones after they have worn out
  • They only eat 6-30 meals per year
  • Underwater, anacondas can hold their breath for 10 minutes
  • Snakes have died by biting and poisoning themselves
  • They kill over 40,000 people a year
  • Anacondas mate in what is called a “breeding ball” which usually consists of 1 female and 12 males. They all stay in this ball for a month.

Keeping Yourself Safe

It’s always important to keep an eye on the ground and when near water, especially where bushes are involved. If you find a snake on your property, you will want to call in a professional. If you are bitten by one, you should call 911 and get to a hospital right away. It’s important not to try to suck the venom out or use any mechanical tools to try to release the venom. This can cause the venom to spread. Make sure to keep the bitten area lower than your heart so that it will keep the venom away from vital organs.

If you see a snake, take a step back and just observe. Don’t run from it or try to pick it up. Snakes don’t intentionally try to frighten or attack people, they are just trying to live their lives in their natural way.

The repellents are not effective against all types of snakes and therefore, it won’t stop all snakes who come into your yard looking for food sources. Controlling food sources will help to deter snakes on it’s own. Removing pet food containers and closing trash containers. General pest control will help as well.
