Though not as common of a problem for homeowners as raccoons and armadillos, when foxes are a nuisance they can be extremely difficult to deal with. Cautious and clever animals, there’s a reason we use the idiom “cunning as a fox”, it can be a frustrating process trying to solve a fox problem on your property. While there are two species of fox found in Florida, the red fox and the gray fox, gray foxes are not as common as red foxes and they rarely come into conflict with people, when we receive a call about a nuisance fox it’s almost always a red fox. Though foxes can carry rabies, it is relatively rare, however, foxes can still be extremely dangerous if trapped or cornered so we strongly recommend not trying to trap foxes yourself.
Dealing with a fox problem starts with a complete inspection of the property, we need to figure out where the fox is coming from and what is attracting the animal to the property. When we have all that information we can come up with a detailed plan, tailored to deal with the fox problem on your property.
Once we know how and why the fox is accessing the property, we can get started on removing them. Foxes can be a very difficult animal to trap, usually being reluctant to enter cage traps that are not properly camouflaged and de-scented. Sometimes cage traps will not work at all and other trapping methods need to be utilized that may require special permitting from the state of Florida. Though the trapping process seems straightforward, the job is only half finished once the animal is trapped. State laws determine what must be done with trapped foxes, and we have the knowledge and resources to properly and legally deal with trapped animals in the safest and most humane way possible.
Usually, when people have issues with foxes on their property it’s related to the keeping of small animals outside, chicken coops and rabbit hutches are common targets for them. Whether the foxes find unsecured sections of the structure or cause damage to get in, once inside they can devastate the population of animals inside very quickly. If you have an animal enclosure that has been ravaged by foxes, we can use our extensive experience to repair and reinforce the enclosure to make sure it is fox-proof for the future.
