With the heat comes more pests, it’s just the way it is. They no longer have to hibernate because the colder and rainy weather has gone away and so, the pests will come out to play. Every year, we all see this and we all have to find a way to cope with it. What most people don’t know is that summertime pests usually do more damage than any other seasonal pests.
Why? Because it’s so hot that they are looking to find a place to cool down which means your home or business becomes their cool-spot destination. They want to get out of the sun, especially in the southern states where temps rise well over 100 degrees and that’s in the shade!
Pests that thrive in the summer and will cause more damage:
- Ants
Ants spend all winter hibernating and they don’t come out much during the spring because of the rainy weather. This means that when summer rolls around, they are ready to party. We see them all year-round however because they have to constantly forage for food and they have to build up their fall reserves when it gets too cold for them to leave their colony. Since food is scarce during the summertime because there are so many pests looking for food, ants usually travel indoors to find what they need. Summertime is when more pet owners will find ants in their pets’ food bowls. - Mosquitoes
These little guys are the worst because they suck our blood and leave a gnarly, itchy bump behind. They also carry disease, which is transferable to humans. They are the deadliest insect on the planet and are abundant when it comes to the summertime. If you have water around your home or business that is standing still, know that it’s a breeding ground for mosquitoes. They can use it to lay eggs, which just causes more of a mosquito infestation. - Flies
Flies are both inside and outside pests because they like to fly in every time the door opens. They only reproduce during the hot months, which could cause a huge problem if a few get into your home because one turns into many. - Bees/Wasps
Bees and wasps like to hang around in the fall to collect food sources for the winter months as well. You don’t see them during the fall or winter months much because it’s too cold for them to fly around and gather food. Wasps like to build nests around our porches but bees will build a hive just about anywhere they feel is safe. While this can cause some damage to your home or business, it can cause even more harm to a person themselves since bee stings in large numbers can be extremely harmful.
