Five Common Spring Pests

Five Common Spring Pests

Springtime is here, which means plenty of rain, spring cleaning, plant growth, and of course, plenty of springtime pests to look out for. Ants, termites, spiders, mosquitoes, and rodents are a few of the pests that you could see in your home or yard this season.

They create problems in the home, in the yard, in the garden, or even for a business. Pests are starting to come out of their hibernation and just like humans, they want to enjoy the sunlight too. If you haven’t called pest control yet, now is the time.

Ants:

Ants are one of the most popular pests during the spring and summer seasons. They run in colonies so where you see one, you are sure to see a dozen or more other ants. They can cause structural damage as they seek out food and shelter. If you notice some rustling sounds within your walls, chances are you have an ant infestation.

Ants enter your home or business through a series of areas:

  • Pipes
  • Foundation/walls
  • Cracks
  • Electrical outlets/telephone outlets
  • Attic vents
  • Windows/doors

Since they are so tiny, they have many options to gain access to your home.

Mosquitoes:

Not only are mosquito bites irritating, but they are also dangerous. These little blood-sucking irritants carry disease with them which can make your family, your employees and your customers really sick. Springtime is known for its mosquito problem and depending on the seasonal temps, mosquitoes can hang around until mid-October.

To prevent mosquitoes from gathering in your yard:

  • Be sure to remove all sources that allow for water to stand still
  • Clear away debris
  • Trim shrubs

Termites:

Termites can be detrimental to any foundation that is built from wood because they eat it. They have very large appetites and are usually more active in the spring after it rains. They travel in swarms, which is why they tend to cause so much damage.

Signs of a termite infestation:

  • Hollow-sounding wood
  • Sagging floors and ceilings
  • Crumbling wood (from structure damage)
  • Cracked paint (on wood)
  • Mud tubes
  • Winged insects or wings that have been discarded

Rodents:

Rodents are not active just during spring time, they are annual pests. They are always looking for a place to find shelter, food and water. However, their breeding season is from April to June. Rodents are dangerous because they carry a lot of different diseases that can have mild or severe symptoms for humans.

Check for rodents by:

  • Looking for holes within the interior and exterior of your home
  • Use weather stripping to remove gaps under doorways
  • Keep garbage can lids tightly closed at all times

Spiders:

Spiders love the spring so you will find them in your yard, in your home and at your business frequently, unless you’ve called in pest control. Certain spiders like Black Widow and Brown Recluse spiders are extremely poisonous to humans.

Spiders like to hide away in dark, cool spaces like basements, attics and even air vents where they can easily search for prey.

To keep spiders from invading your home:

  • Seal cracks around the exterior of your home
  • Look for areas that have moisture (kitchen and bathroom)
  • Be sure to store food in airtight containers and take out trash regularly
