Rats and the Pandemic

Rats are seen more prominently in the days of the pandemic because most people are still staying indoors. Typically, rats are able to feed on what humans leave behind on a daily basis. They come out at night to forage for the goods humans have dropped, which allows them to eat well during the day. Through the pandemic however, this has changed. Rats are having a harder time finding food sources now. So they can be seen running wild in the streets, around/in businesses and of course, in residences.

The CDC has put out a few warnings to show that the rodent population is spiking in many areas. Restaurants are usually always overflowing with food sources, but with the pandemic hanging around, restaurants still haven’t opened up to full capacity. This leaves rats to look for food in other places. Rodent traps do not work as well as they used to because rodents have evolved over the years. They know these traps as a great food source when it catches other pests.

More businesses owners are calling in pest control now more than even before the pandemic hit because of the growing problem. They are very hungry, which has led to speculation that they have even attacked humans. They are certainly attacking each other and even killing their young, just to eat.

Rats can carry over 35 different types of transmittable diseases in their feces, urine and saliva. Not too mention, if they bite, that can transmit as well. They can transmit Hantavirus, LCM (Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis), the plague, Rat-bite Fever, Salmonellosis, Tularemia, etc.
